JMAXLOLO section on Pinoy Lifestyle Magazine...
This is the Nov-Dec 2011 issue

Scratch em’, mix em’, elaborate and listen... Sounds like a cut from a popular dance tune, but that’s what you’ll probably hear most when we talk about DJs in particular. But we’re not gonna talk about the profession itself, hence, its more about Pinoy (Filipino) DJs and how they help and contribute into today’s music and the ever-changing nightlife and club scene.
Pinoy Lifestyle magazine takes the music and the world of Filipino DJs into a different level by providing our readers the utmost comfort of getting the facts straight as to who they are, how they became famous, their achievements and where they play are just some of the things that we will be exploring. Plus we’ll also get to know what’s happening in and around Dubai—Events, Gigs, Pinoy hangouts and lots more. Be sure to grab a copy every month as we provide you a fun-filled and an informative issue for everyone’s reading pleasure.

Setting herself as one of Dubai’s renowned female DJs by grabbing first place of this year’s most recent PALME DJ Competition 2011 — Arlene Ganzon (AJ), a.k.a. DJ KROFT, is certainly enjoying Dubai’s club scene as she currently holds the crown and bragging rights of this year’s no.1 female DJ in the Middle East. Pinoy Lifestyle caught up with AJ despite her busy schedule and held her in a busy corner for a quick interview.
A feisty yet uniquely inclined to music since her childhood days, Arlene Ganzon, or ‘AJ’, could be considered as Iloilo’s pride when it comes to entertainment specially when talking about the club scene and the world of DJs. Growing up with parents and relatives who were also heavily influenced by music it’s no wonder AJ had quickly indulged herself into the world of music mixing even during her junior years. With the help of her DJ friends, she managed to skippity-skipped the basics and quickly advanced herself as a club resident DJ in the year 2006.
Hungry for new and totally different atmosphere, AJ stepped into Dubai and landed a job as Marketing Assistant for an Advertising company. Little did she know that her DJ skills was trying to reach out despite very her hectic work schedule. Then later on in 2011, the hidden talent that kept itching to be free, was finally ceased and released. Now as a freelance DJ she has quickly became one of Dubai’s favorite DJ performer on private parties, special shows and events. Her most recent event was FLOOR PLAY wherein she performed alongside with some of Dubai’s finest Filipino DJs.
We had the opportunity to get more up-close and personal with AJ (DJ KROFT) and this is what we’ve squeezed out from her.
Describe yourself and how would you want our fellow Pinoy DJs to know you as?
As a person, I would say i am strong, independent, outspoken and opinionated. I am very passionate about music and aspirations on my DJ career.
Where did the name ‘KROFT’ came from and why you chose it? Oh… it’s from this videogame vixen portrayed by Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft). The name “croft” sounded cool, then eventually spelled the name with a “K”.
What makes you different from other DJs?
Uhmmm… it’s kinda cliché, but seriously. I would say that it’s mainly about my character whenever I DJ, then everything evolves from there.
Performance wise, how would you describe your style?
Eclectic! that’s just it... I have my own ways when it comes to connecting with the crowd and the music I play everytime I perform. I have this sort of an unpredictable playlist and I am not afraid to introduce new songs.
How do you choose your music?
I know good music when i hear one... anything that injects the funk in me.
Who are your influences?
The Beatles, Motown music, Madonna, MJ, Armand Van Helden, Mark Knight and Benny Benassi.
If you had a time machine what year would you go back to DJ and why?
I’d say, the 70s… the disco days! why not.
What’s the first album you ever bought for yourself?
Oh… that would be TLC, Crazy Sexy Cool album. I’m a such a huge fan! Hahaha!
What’s your all-time favorite club tune?
‘Chase The Sun’ by Planet Funk.
Describe Dubai’s club scene?
Dubai’s club scene is very much different compared back home… the music and the crowd are so diverse and I love it!
Tell us about your performance during the 2011 PALME DJ competition?
The overall experience was so amazing! To be honest, i did not join the competition with the intention of winning it and the fact that there’s a lot of talented female DJs out there. I just wanted Dubai to feel my presence. PALME was also the first competition that I joined.
What are your plans for the rest of the year?
Discussions on possible events are ongoing. Hopefully, everything’s gonna be alright.

Talk about Pinoy DJs at its finest... and when it comes to that, there’s no better way to kick-start this section of the magazine but to know more about the man who revolutionised record scratching according to his styles and ways, DJ QBert, ladies and gentlemen.
Why wouldn’t the crab share his toys? Because he was shellfish! But kidding aside, the word crab was use to be only known as a crustacean, but now, all that has been changed as DJ QBert invented a new form of record scratching that is very popular to all DJs who are into scratching or turntablism and he called it the “Crab”.
Richard Quitevis, more popularly known as DJ QBert, a legendary 4-time DMC world champion and I would say the best DJ in the world. He has raised the bar on a high level where most DJs of different raise would look upon him as an inspiration. QBert is so good he even invented a turntable built exclusively for DJs who just love to do the scratch.
Born and raised in the US, Qbert is a Filipino-American who grew up in San Francisco’s Excelsior District and started playing and learned how to record scratch at the age of 15. During the mid-80s he was influenced by the performers of the local hip hop community.
Alongside with Mix Master Mike and DJ Apollo they started a group called FM20 in 1990. After that, their group became the famous Rock Steady Crew DJs when they were invited by Crazy Legs from a show in New York and later on decided to enter and take on the Disco Mix Club World DJ Championships (DMC) world title in 1992. He then became one of the founding members of the Invisible Skratch Piklz and succeeded in creating the concept of turntablism as music with layering drums, basslines, and scratch solos mixed all together.
During the 90s decade, because of his superb talent and skills, QBert dominated the DJ scene and collected championship titles of the Disco Mixing Club (DMC): 1991 USA Champion and the 1992-1994 and became one of the judges in the year 1995. QBert received the DMC DJ Hall of Fame award for outstanding contributions to the competition and more importantly, the industry, along with MixMaster Mike in June 1998.
QBert became the most documented DJ in the world and has been featured in local and national publications as well as international magazines and newspapers. He even appeared on two film festival movies namely Cannes Film Festival and Sundance Festival.
QBert’s influence to the world of DJs and turntablism is incomaparable. His uniquely dynamic style and control of the turntable at breakneck speed is truly considered an improvisation to the music industry.
